Shipborne voyage data recorder functions just like aviation VCR and is designed to store the position, dynamic condition, physical circumstances, orders, manipulation and closed circuit monitoring images of ships, which helps investigation in case of accidents.

The product is studied based on the platform of ‘Reworks’, a kind of embedded operating system, by No. 704 and No. 711 institutes of China Shipbuilding Industry Corporation (CSIC) as well as Shanghai Scientific Research Institute of Shipping [SSSRI].

At present, China's shipborne VDR market is dominated by foreign products that use Windows operating system. Chinese ships have to pay high fee for the products.

The VDR based on Reworks operating system will greatly reduce the cost for Chinese ships in the industry. Besides, the embedded processors can be used in families and the market in China has just started.
